About Save the Family

OUR MISSION
We help children in homeless families by treating the whole family
with programs to break the negative cycles of poverty, abuse, and
homelessness.We strengthen the Valley's communities by facilitating the transition of families to financial and emotional self-sufficiency.

Agency Profile
Save the Family was founded in 1988 in response to the need for a comprehensive community service dedicated to assisting homeless families with children transition to self-sufficiency. In November of 1989, Save the Family housed its first four families in a four-plex in Mesa which became a part of our Transitional Living Program. Since then, the agency has grown to encompass 80 transitional housing units in Mesa, Tempe, Chandler and Scottsdale. Last year, Save the Family served 184 families including 376 children in its Transitional Living Program and an additional 85 families with 190 children in its Affordable Rental Program, and through an outreach of local schools, Save the Family served an additional 2500 youths.

Save the Family was motivated to headquarter in Mesa because of its affordability, access to public transportation and proximity to agency services. However, our work is much more far-reaching than our East Valley roots. In fact, we've taken referrals from as far west as Litchfield Park and as far north as Flagstaff. Each year, our service area and the number of our housing units have continued to expand.




Established as a nondenominational, 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency, Save the Family is a recognized United Way Agency. Save the Family differentiates itself in the following way:

Since our inception in 1988, our thinking was well ahead of the current welfare reform movement. Although the welfare legislation recently approved by Congress which emphasizes "self-sufficiency," "moving welfare recipients into the work force," and requiring recipients "to work in exchange for the benefits they receive" may be new to some, it has been an integral part of Save the Family from the onset. Our program has always demanded strict accountability coupled with supportive programs to give homeless families the skills to break the negative patterns of behavior that lead to their homelessness. It's meant to be a way out, not just a handout.
The success of our whole family approach is what has distinguished the work of Save the Family. In fact, it has proven effective for approximately 90% of our clients who complete our program. Typically, these families successfully transition back into the community within an average of 8 months.

Moreover, Save the Family is not a big international organization with huge overhead. In fact, 90% of the money received goes directly to benefit homeless families

In keeping with our beliefs, we have designed a comprehensive program that includes transitional housing, case management and personal growth services for homeless families with children.
